What to do after a car accident
Is there a sound that is more stress-inducing than the crunch of a car accident? Knowing what steps to take after an accident can help you remain calm during a tense situation.
Who you gonna call?
After a car accident, many people call 911 first, but that's not always the best course of action. Local 911 service is meant for emergencies, like when someone is injured or in danger. If you're in an accident and no one has been hurt, it's best to call the local police rather than using 911 resources that might be needed elsewhere. A 411 operator can give you the number.
Do I have to involve the police?
No matter what, if you're involved in an automobile accident involving another person or that causes damage to someone else's property, you must call the police.
Each police jurisdiction in the province has different standards for when they are required to visit an automobile accident scene. Depending on the amount of damage caused and if anyone was injured in the accident, either an officer will be dispatched to evaluate the situation or you will be directed to a local collision reporting centre. In areas that are serviced by OPP instead of local police, an officer will usually attend the scene. In such a case, if the damage is less than $1,000, an officer is less likely to come out. Whether an officer comes to the scene or not, get the name and badge number of the officer you speak with and ask for the accident report number.
Play it safe
Take whatever steps you can to make the situation safe. Move everyone involved as far as you can off the roadway and be aware of the traffic around you.
Get the details
Get as much information as you can from the parties involved (e.g., names, phone numbers, addresses, insurance information, vehicle details). If you have an OTIP automobile insurance policy, use your Curo Claims Services accident log to record important details. Note the damage caused to your own vehicle and, if possible, take photos of the accident with your cell phone or camera. If anyone witnessed the accident and is willing to help, ask for their contact information.
