Frequently Asked Questions – Property Insurance – Renovations FAQ

Do I need to advise OTIP if I install a wood stove?

Yes. Most insurers regard wood stoves as a source of "auxiliary heat" and want to ensure that it was installed according to regulations. Wood stoves improperly installed are one of the major causes of total house fires. Our service representatives can provide an invaluable service to your family by reviewing your completed wood stove questionnaire with you.

Do I need to let OTIP know if I make any changes to my home?

Yes. Most policies state that you are responsible to notify the insurer (via your insurance broker) within 30 days of starting work on any improvement, extension or addition to your dwelling. This is important to ensure that the replacement value of your home is sufficient in the event of loss or damage, as this may affect the guaranteed replacement cost provision in your policy. If you've made changes to your property, please call an OTIP service representative to discuss the impact on your insurance policy.
